Roller skates

Roller skates are sports equipment consisting essentially of shoes and under on a chassis -mounted rollers. There are roller skates, in which the chassis and the shoe are fixedly connected to each other, and those that have been repaired with leather straps Ä. can be strapped. A modern variant provides that chassis and shoe are separably connected with a mechanical bond.

Another variant of the skate are inline skates. The common term for the so exercised sports is Skates.

Differences between the conventional roller skates to inline skates are the width ( as you bend less to the side ) and the lower Wheelbase ( roller skates are more maneuverable, inline skates faster). In general, roller skates are steered via a rubber-sprung hinge.

History and Development

An uncertain tradition tells of roller skates that had been used in a London theater performance in 1743. Details are not known. Around 1760, built the instrument makers and violinist Jean -Joseph Merlin, from the Belgian Huy a construction of three serially mounted below the shoe rollers, which were called skaites. The goal was an imitation of the ice run on floor or stage. At a masked ball at Carlisle House Soho ( London), he played the violin and roller skating continuously, drove because he could neither slow nor drive curves in a mirrored wall and was seriously injured.

Around the middle of the 19th century, the roller skating again won a stage spectacle a certain attraction. Thus came in the opera before Le prophète by Giacomo Meyerbeer, premiered in Paris in 1849, an ice-skating scene that was performed on roller skates. How far is the realization of a constantly bandied message from a roller skate design of the inventor Philipp Reis was ( soon after 1858 ) advanced, would have to be covered in more detail.

On January 6, 1863, the Americans James L. Plimpton received a U.S. patent on the process invented by him skate with four wheels. For a larger spread, it took another basics. In 1870, Paris was almost completely paved, the other major European cities followed. 1883 were affordable for everyday devices by the invention of ball grinding ball bearings. These two requirements drove the development proceeds to a usable by urban youth on the street game and sports equipment.

Outside of competitive sports belonged to in the 1950s iron rollers and fixed on the shoe soles jaws with leather straps to its default characteristics. 1956 introduces the leader Hudora rubber wheels that will soon be replaced by plastic. Later permanently mounted to the boot roles are customary and 1980 are Rollerboots with their colorful boots, soft wheels and steerable chassis for trend. A new mode change brings about 1990 inline skaters on the market, in which the rollers are mounted in a line one behind the other. Another new variant heels scooters, like the Heelys and PLIWS brand.
