Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Portoviejo

The Archdiocese of Porto Viejo (Latin: Portus Archidioecesis Veteris, Spanish: Arquidiócesis de Porto Viejo ) is a located in Ecuador Roman Catholic archdiocese headquartered in Porto Viejo.

History

The Diocese of Porto Viejo was on March 23, 1870 by Pope Pius IX. built out of territory of the Archdiocese of Quito and of the diocese of Guayaquil. It was the Archdiocese of Quito is a suffragan. The Diocese of Porto Viejo announced on December 14, 1945 from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Esmeraldas. On January 22, 1956, the Diocese of Porto Viejo was the Archdiocese of Guayaquil is a suffragan.

On February 25, 1994, the Diocese of Porto Viejo by Pope John Paul II was raised to an archbishopric.
