Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rabaul

The Archdiocese of Rabaul (Latin: Archidioecesis Rabaulensis ) is a location in Papua New Guinea Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Rabaul.

History

Forerunner of today's Archdiocese of Rabaul in 1844 is founded out of the Apostolic Vicariate Apostolic Vicariate of Micronesia New Zealand. On May 15, 1886, the territory of the Caroline was separated and the two missions sui juris Eastern Carolines and Western Carolines built, which had been united by Pope Pius X on December 19, 1905 Diocese of Caroline Islands.

Leo XIII. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of New Britain on May 10 in 1889 parts of the territory of the Apostolic Vicariate of Melanesia and the entire areas of the Apostolic Vicariate of Micronesia. On December 8, 1890, took the name Vicariate Apostolic of New Pomerania.

With the Decree Post exstincum the Congregation de Propaganda Fide took it on 14 November 1922 names, Apostolic Vicariate of Rabaul on. In the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums it was raised with the Bull Laeta incrementa on 15 November 1966, adopted the present name.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • February 24, 1896 at the Prefecture Apostolic of Kaiser-Wilhelms -Land;
  • July 27, 1897 at the Prefecture Apostolic of British Solomon Islands;
  • June 28, 1897 at the Apostolic Vicariate Gilbert Islands;
  • May 23, 1898 at the Apostolic Prefecture German - Solomon Islands;
  • 1905, the mission sui juris Marshall Islands;
  • July 5, 1957 at the Apostolic Vicariate of Kavieng;
  • July 4, 2003 to the bishopric of Kimbe.
