Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tanger

The Archdiocese of Tangier ( Latin: Archidioecesis Tingitana ) is located in Morocco Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Tangier.

History

As early as 325 a bishopric in Tingis is detected, which went down later by the onslaught of Islam similar to all North African dioceses. 1344 is detected as a Spanish Dominican bishop named Alphonsus Bonihominis. Then in 1469 the diocese of Morocco and Tangier was founded by the Spanish diocese of Ceuta from, but which was already in 1570 reunited with Ceuta.

The Archdiocese of Tangier was founded from the diocese of Ceuta out on November 28, 1630 again as Apostolic Prefecture of Morocco in Tangier, rose on 14 April 1908 on the Apostolic Vicariate, announced on July 2, 1923 parts of its territory to the founding of the Apostolic Vicariate Rabat from and was finally raised on 14 November 1956 to the archbishopric name immediately.

The 28,000 km ² Archdiocese counted 1950 113 164 believers; In 1980, there were only 9,750. Today there are still only 2,510 Catholics in a population of 4,200,000 people in this region. In 1950, there were 22 diocesan priests, 50 religious priests and 211 nuns in 15 parishes. Nowadays, there are only two diocesan priests, 7 religious priests and 95 nuns in 9 parishes. This shows how strong the number of members of the Order has decreased in the Archdiocese of Tangier. The departure of European occupation led the archdiocese to a profound restructuring, like the other dioceses in North Africa as well. Is not without interest that the diocese is one of the mission areas of the Franciscans that challenge their bishops to this day.
