Roman Catholic Diocese of Cayenne

The Diocese of Cayenne (Latin: Dioecesis Caiennensis ) is a location in the French overseas department of French Guiana Roman Catholic diocese based in Cayenne.

History

The Diocese of Cayenne was built in 1651 by Pope Innocent X as Apostolic Prefecture of French Guiana - Cayenne. The colony but in 1763 pastoral care and mission operated Jesuits and Capuchins since 1643, left again. Of significance was the appearance of the Blessed Anne -Marie Javouhey, foundress of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Cluny, who, at the instigation of the French government established a settlement in 1828. Also the Holy Ghost worked since 1816 in the colony.

On 10 January 1933, the Prefecture Apostolic was raised to the Apostolic Vicariate. On February 29, 1956, the Apostolic Vicariate of French Guiana - Cayenne was raised to the bishopric. The diocese is the Archdiocese of Saint- Pierre and Fort-de -France is a suffragan.
