History

Diocese Seckau

1218 founded the Salzburg Archbishop Eberhard II the diocese Seckau, the so Gurk ( 1072 ) and Chiemsee ( 1215) was the third suffragan of Salzburg. 1228 followed, as the fourth suffragan, nor the Diocese of Lavant in St. Andrew 's Lavant Valley.

The seat of the bishopric until 1782 was a former Augustinian Canons nunmehrige Benedictine Seckau in Upper Styria (district Mur ). The election and appointment of Seckauer Bishop was responsible for the Archbishop of Salzburg. The Seckauer bishop was also vicar for the Duchy of Styria.

The original, however, by no means coherent, territory comprised only 13 parishes and ranged from Seckau on the Stubalpe to the Kainachtal and again at Wildon on the Mur. From the beginning of foundation, the diocese Seckauer bishops resided not in the top Irish Seckau Abbey, but on Seggau Leibnitz in Southern Styria, in some cases also in Graz. Also, most of episcopal ordinations to the 18th century took place at Schloss Seggau. Only the burial place of the bishops was located in Upper Styria immediately adjacent to the Collegiate Church of Seckau.

Diocese of Graz- Seckau

In 1786 the bishopric was moved to Graz. With the incorporation of the Diocese of Leoben in 1859 the diocesan boundaries correspond essentially to those of the present-day province of Styria. For the Lower Styria (since 1919 a part of Slovenia ) was transferred in 1859 the Diocese of Lavant to Marburg.

Since 1963, the diocese is officially Graz- Seckau.
