History

First known by name as Bishop of Poreč was St.. Maurus, who suffered martyrdom end of the 3rd century. It is believed that Pula was a bishopric in the 4th century.

Until its merger Poreč and Pula were under different Metropolitanates: Aquileia, Udine, Gorizia and Venice. The formerly independent dioceses of PIĆAN and Novigrad were incorporated into the present diocese. In the reorganization of the dioceses in the Empire of Austria came in 1828, the northern and the central part of Istria to the diocese of Trieste and Koper.

After the Second World War, an independent Apostolic Administration was established in 1947 in Pazin. This managed those areas of the diocese of Trieste, which had now become Yugoslavian. 1977 decided by the Holy See under Pope Paul VI. , That these areas are to integrate into the Diocese of Poreč - Pula.

In parts of the Diocese of the Old Slavic rite was maintained until the 20th century.
