Roman Catholic Diocese of Saint-Denis-de-La Réunion

The Diocese of Saint- Denis- de -La Réunion (Latin: Dioecesis S. Dionysii Reunionis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the French overseas country (POM = Pays d' outre- mer) Réunion in the Indian Ocean. Seat is the island's capital, Saint- Denis.

History

1712, the Apostolic Prefecture of the islands in the Indian Ocean by Pope Clement XI. founded from the former diocese of Malacca out. Pope Pius VII in 1818 it changed its name to the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon. 1826 and on January 10, 1830 gave the Apostolic Prefecture of Bourbon from parts of their territory establishing the Apostolic Prefectures Batavia and South Sea Islands. Gregory XVI. founded in 1841, the Apostolic Prefecture of Madagascar out; Pius IX. rose 1850, the Bourbon Prefecture to the present diocese of Saint- Denis- de -La Réunion. On February 26, 1860, the Pope founded the Apostolic Prefecture Zanguebar from parts of the territory of the diocese.
