Roman Catholic Diocese of Szombathely

The Diocese of Szombathely ( ungar: Szombathelyi egyházmegye, Latin: Dioecesis Sabariensis ) is a Hungarian diocese, which is subordinate to the Archdiocese of Veszprém.

History

Szombathely ( German Steinamanger ) was founded in 50 AD by the Romans, was then called Sabaria and was a religious center of Pannonia, later capital of Pannonia Prima. There was also a Christian community that by the Huns ( 400 ), and the Avars was destroyed ( 550 ).

Charlemagne colonized the area by German settlers and imputed it 803 of the Archdiocese of Salzburg. King Ludwig ( † 876 ), gave Steinamanger in 860 the Archbishop of Salzburg Adalwin († 873 ). Under Stephen I, the area was probably subordinate to the Diocese of Raab in the year 1000.

Maria Theresa established in 1777 with the approval of Pope Pius VI. from parts of the dioceses Raab, Veszprém and Agram the Diocese of Szombathely. Under the first bishop János Szily, the seminar and the episcopal palace were built. It began with the construction of the cathedral, the one completed in 1821.

1922 an area was made with about 100,000 believers in the newly built Apostolic Administration of Burgenland after the Treaty of Trianon. 1923 onwards parishes with 67,000 faithful in the Diocese of Lavant Marburg.

On 31 May 1993, the diocese was transferred to the newly established Archdiocese of Veszprém.

Diocesan patron is St. Martin of Tours, who was born around 316 in Sabaria.
