Roman Catholic Diocese of Varanasi

The Diocese of Varanasi (Latin: Dioecesis Varanasiensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic diocese based in Varanasi.

History

The Diocese of Varanasi was on July 11, 1946 by Pope Pius XII. out of territory of the Diocese of Allahabad established as Apostolic Prefecture of Gorakhpur. On September 17, 1958, the Apostolic Prefecture Gorakhpur was renamed Prefecture Apostolic of Benares - Gorakhpur. The Apostolic Prefecture of Benares - Gorakhpur was raised on 5 June 1970 and renamed Diocese Diocese of Banaras. The diocese was the Archdiocese of Agra is a suffragan. On 14 May 1971, the name was changed in the diocese of Varanasi. The Diocese of Varanasi was on June 19, 1984 from parts of its territory establishing the Eparchy of Gorakhpur.

The diocese comprises the districts of Varanasi Varanasi, Azamgarh, Ballia, Chandauli, Ghazipur, Jaunpur and Mau in Uttar Pradesh.
