Roman Catholicism in Turkey

The Roman Catholic Church in Turkey is a minority church ( Diaspora ).

Church organization

The Catholic Church in the Turkish territory is one of seven dioceses of different rites:

  • Latin rite: Apostolic Vicariate of Istanbul, Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia and İzmir Archdiocese
  • Armenian rite: archeparchy Istanbul
  • Chaldean rite: archeparchy Diyarbakir
  • Byzantine rite: Apostolic Exarchate of Istanbul
  • Westsyrischer Rite: Patriarchal Exarchate Turkey

About 21,500 Catholics live in them:

  • Archdiocese of Izmir: about 2,000 Catholics, 10 parishes
  • Apostolic Vicariate of Anatolia ( seat İskenderun ): about 4,500 Catholics, 8 parishes
  • Apostolic Vicariate of Istanbul: about 15,000 Catholics, 13 parishes

Rights situation

Since the Catholic Church has no separate training opportunities for candidates to the priesthood, the priests working here are trained abroad. Of the 61 priests of the country has 50 of a religious community and not from Turkey.

Another problem is the fact that the Catholic Church in Turkey has no legal status.
