Roman Ghetto

The Roman Ghetto was a special area in Rome, in which the city's Jews were obliged to live. It was set up in 1555 due to the Edict Cum Nimis Absurdum of Pope Paul IV. High walls with five gates were drawn around the area where since pre-Christian times Jews settled. It was located approximately between the Capitol, Tiber Island and Largo Argentina. The Roman Ghetto was the beginning of the 19th century about 10,000 inhabitants and was one of the largest in Europe.

The Roman ghetto was liquidated in 1870 as the last of Western Europe, but occupy the Papal States against Italian troops fighting Rome.
