Ronald Langacker

Ronald W. Langacker (* December 27, 1942 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin) is an American linguist. He is the founder of cognitive grammar ( Cognitive Grammar ).

Life

Langacker 1966 his doctorate at the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign. From 1966 to 2003 he was a professor of linguistics at the University of California, San Diego. Since 2003 he is Professor Emeritus of the University. From 1997 to 1999 he was president of the International Cognitive Linguistics Association.

Langacker is the founder of cognitive grammar, and one of the main architects of the cognitive linguistics. In his two-volume magnum opus Foundations of Cognitive Grammar (1987, 1991), which is considered a standard work in cognitive linguistics, it describes the general principles of this theory. Similar to the representatives of the Construction Grammar Langacker assumes that human languages ​​including their grammars are inherently symbolic nature, which means that they consist of phonological and semantic units and links between them. Furthermore Langacker claims that linguistic structures are motivated by general cognitive processes; he used in formulating his theory often principles of Gestalt psychology, and especially visual perception.
