Roque Ceruti

Roque Ceruti (* around 1683 in Milan, † December 6, 1760 in Lima) was a native of Italy Peruvian composer.

Life

Ceruti was born around 1683 in Milan, where he received his musical education. In 1707 he came to Peru and in the following year was Kapellmeister at the court of the viceroy of Peru, Manuel de Oms y Santa Pau. In 1708 he co-wrote with Tomás de Torrejón y Velasco El mejor escudo the musical comedy de Perseo to a libretto by the Viceroy. After his death, he was transferred to the ministry of the Successor Carmine Nicolás Caraccioli.

As Caraccioli 1717 traveled to Italy, Ceruti lost his job and was in 1721 as Kapellmeister of the cathedral to Trujillo, where he worked as a composer of sacred music and made a special contribution to the development of the children's choir. After the death of Torrejón y Velasco in 1728 he succeeded him as director of music at the cathedral in Lima. Due to his deteriorating health took over here in 1742 his student José de Orejón y Aparicio organist. 1743 awarded him the title of the viceroy músico extraordinario.
