Rorippa austriaca

The Austrian cress ( Rorippa austriaca ) is a species of the genus marsh cress ( Rorippa ) within the family of cruciferous plants ( Brassicaceae).

Description

The Austrian cress grows as a deciduous, perennial, herbaceous plant, reaching heights of growth from 40 to 100 cm. It has underground runners; the stem is branched above. The middle and upper stem leaves are undivided, irregularly toothed, elliptical, cordate at the base, the stem with two lobes comprehensively and in hand, short haired.

The flowering period extends from June to August. The four sepals are 1.5 to 2.5 mm long. The four yellow petals are 3 to 4 mm long. The standing on a 7 to 15 mm long fruit stalk silicles is nearly spherical with a length of 1.5 to 3 mm.

Ecology

In the Austrian cress a strong vegetative propagation by stolons is recognizable; therefore it acts bodenfestigend on slopes and banks.

Occurrence

The Austrian cress is an Eastern European - West Asian plant species. In Central Europe, their occurrence extends north to the Oder and Elbe region, and it is in the last few decades the process to nationalize in other areas.

The Austrian cress preferred at times wet, nutrient-rich, loose, sandy loam. They inhabited the banks, also goes to ways and dams. At the Oder, Elbe, Rhine, Main, Neckar and Isar they are found rarely. In the area of ​​the Danube and in Austria it occurs scattered.
