Rosario Islands

The part belonging to Colombia Archipelago Nuestra Señora del Rosario, short Islas del Rosario ( Rosario Islands engl. ) called, consists of 28 small islands and is located about 40 km southwest from the center of the city of Cartagena de Indias in the Caribbean Sea and belongs to the metropolitan area. The " largest " island is Isla Grande. The islands emerged about 5,000 years ago by undersea volcanic activity.

The man reached the archipelago even before the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus. According to the chronicles of the Spanish conquistadors were living at the time of their arrival natives of the family of the Caribs in the archipelago. They subsisted mainly on fishing.

Today, the Islas del Rosario are with their crystal clear waters and coral reefs as a popular destination and diving area. They are one of the 52 natural national parks of Colombia and can be reached by (fast ) boat in about 1 ½ hours from Cartagena. Cartagena is about 45 minutes by air and 19 hours by bus from Bogotá.
