Roseau ( formerly Charlottetown ) is the capital of Dominica with about 16,000 inhabitants. The port city is located in the southwest of the island and is the economic and cultural center of the country.

Roseau is the entrance gate to Dominica. In addition to daily ferry services from Guadeloupe and Martinique make several times a week large cruise ships in the port firmly with which most of the tourists reached the country. Roseau also has a small airport, Canefield Airport ( IATA code DCF); the second Dominica's airport, Melville Hall Airport ( IATA code DOM) is located about 30 km northeast of Roseau. However, both airports do not have international approval, so Dominica can be reached by air only from the surrounding islands with small machines. Roseau is the starting point for many attractions of the island, such as the Trafalgar Falls or the Boiling Lake. The Morne Trois Pitons National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is located about 13 km east of Roseau.

History

Dominica was from Columbus, discovered on November 3, 1493, a Sunday and named after the day of the Lord. As a result of the possession of the island for a long time between England and France was disputed. The French occupied it in the 17th century and claimed in their possession until 1759, when the British conquered it, which also recognized the Peace of Paris in 1763 as the masters of the island. In the North American War of Independence in 1781 they conquered the French again, had they but in 1783 the British returned, which it was again assured by the Treaty of 1814.
