Roskilde (titular see)

Roskilde ( Italian: Roeskilde, Roschildia ) is a titular of the Roman Catholic Church.

It goes back to an episcopal see in the city of Roskilde on the island of Zealand, Denmark. The Diocese of Roskilde was founded in 991 as a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Hamburg -Bremen, from 1104 it belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Lund, which was by then also been suffragan of Hamburg- Bremen.

For diocesan territory included - each with its offshore islets - the Baltic islands of Zealand, Moen and Rügen, which latter from 1168 to 1325 was Danish and thereafter Pomeranian.

After the Reformation, the Catholic Diocese of Roskilde became a Lutheran bishopric Zealand (but without Rügen) and the now Lutheran bishop resided in Copenhagen. 1922, the diocese was divided into the Diocese of Copenhagen Zealand and the new Diocese of Roskilde.

The titular Roskilde in 1964 dissolved and is ranked among the "historical" Titularbistümern.
