Roslagsbanan

The narrow-gauge railway line Roslagsbanan with a track width of 891 mm connects the northeastern suburbs of Stockholm with the Swedish capital. The name refers to the region Roslagen in which there are several stations. This is a radical of the network of railway company Stockholm Roslagens Järnvägar AB ( SRJ ). Originally, the entire network of this company were colloquially referred to as Roslagsbanan.

History

The story to 1972 is dealt with in the article about Stockholm- Roslagens Järnvägar. The sliver on the right shows the route network between Stockholm and Rimbo at the time of handing over to SL with the following modifications.

Acquisition by SL

On 1 May 1972, the Swedish state-owned railway company Statens Järnvägar (SJ ) handed over the remaining electrified lines of the Stockholm Roslagens Järnvägar south of Rimbo together with the rolling stock to Storstockholms Lokaltrafik (SL). SL operates on these routes, regional trains under the name Roslagsbanan, the colloquial name for the former overall network. The northernmost section between Kårsta and Rimbo was completely shut down by SL in January 1981 and subsequently degraded. Since then, the former railway junction Rimbo is without any siding.

Decommissioning of Djursholmsbahn

As of 27 August 1973 SJ reduced the traffic on the Djursholmsbahn Djursholms Ösby - Eddavägen on a pair of trains per day. On 1 January 1976 this road section was shut down and subsequently degraded.

Realignment at Stocksund

In the course of the two-pronged expansion, the route was changed at Stocksund 1996. The former single-track swing bridge over the Stocksund was a few hundred meters further west replaced by a solid double-track bridge. The Stocksundes located immediately north of Sikrenoberg, which had been bypassed by the old route, was tunneled. Immediately on the northern tunnel portal, a new breakpoint Stocksund was built. The old route was partially built over by roads, partly by foot and bicycle paths. The former station has since Stocksund without siding, which is a listed station building from 1904 is used as a residence.

Infrastructure

Roslagsbanan today consists of three railway lines that all begin at Stockholms Östra Station ( Stockholm East). Owner is the company AB Storstockholms local tobacconist. The route is electrified throughout (operating with 1500 V DC ) and with the train control system ATC equipped. Roslagsbanan is being expanded and modernized at the time (2013 ); in the fall of 2014, the sections Visinge - Täby kyrkby, Kragstalund - Vallentuna and Rydbo - Åkers Runö to be operated twofold. The two-pronged expansion of other sections is in preparation.

The most important addition to the construction of a spur track Vallentuna is scheduled to Arlanda airport, which shorten the duration by public transport and is drastically reduce the emissions of greenhouse gases. The cost of the route however, has been questioned.

Rolling stock

The railcar type X10p are approved for a maximum speed of 80 km / h and were built between 1988 and 1995. The trains are currently (2013 ) modernized and remodeled wheelchair accessible, the platform displays will be converted to an electronic version with LEDs. The duration of the trains should be extended as far as 2025.

A curiosity in the history, the electric locomotive, nicknamed Hitler dar. It was Engine No. 53, which had been ordered in 1942 at Siemens in Berlin. The final parts arrived at the end of World War II, so the locomotive could be put into service until 1947. She was then rapidly unpopular with the staff. Very strong vibrations made driving uncomfortable and tiring, and the side windows were so narrow that the shunting was significantly more difficult, if the driver was not extremely slim. In addition, the locomotive was very prone to failure and unreliable. Permanent conversions and house designs were required to keep them in operation. These facts may explain the nickname. On November 17, 1971, the locomotive collided with a truck then what they are damaged beyond repair. "Many colleagues were grateful for me ," commented locomotive engineer Birger Ekberg this incident.

Operation

In Stockholm Östra is a direct change to the red line of the Stockholm Metro ( station Tekniska högskolan ) and numerous bus lines, including possible to Vaxholm and Norrtälje. The operation is since January 2013 Arriva Sverige, a subsidiary of DB Arriva, which has gained a corresponding alert. Arriva came in the summer of 2013 in the international headlines, as the male staff sometimes took the service in skirts because the employer despite the high temperatures in the trains did not allow shorts.

In general, the trains run every 15 minutes, during rush hour express trains are used. Drive per day on average 38,000 people with the Roslagsbanan. The transport capacity is 2.5 million train kilometers a year.
