Rothenfels
Rothfels is a city in the Lower Franconian district of Main -Spessart and a member of the administrative community Marktheidenfeld. It is the smallest city in Franconia by residents.

Geography
Geographical Location
Rothfels is on the right of the Main between Lohr and Marktheidenfeld. Wedged between the river and a steep slope the city consists of little more than a main road. Since 2006, the Main Dam, part of the old and disused railway line Lohr am Main - Wertheim, used as a bypass.
Above the town is the castle Rothfels to which the district Bergrothenfels followed.

Name
Etymology
The name Rothfels consists of the Middle High German words red and velse and means red or red rock cliffs.

History
The resulting by 1148 in the protection of the castle Rothfels town was first mentioned as a town in 1342 in a document of the prince-bishop of Mainz Wolfskehl. During 1803, the secularization würzburgische Rothfels fell to the Prince Haus Löwenstein -Wertheim -Rosenberg, 1806, the Principality of Aschaffenburg. 1813 fell Rothfels to the Kingdom of Bavaria.
The districts Bergrothenfels and Windsheim became independent in 1822 and on 1 January 1972 Bergrothenfels was reintegrated. Windsheim today belongs to the municipality Hafenlohr.

In the city you will find some interesting half-timbered houses with statues.
On a rocky hill above the town, the castle Rothfels rises. As a popular destination between Würzburg and Aschaffenburg known, the Roth Felsburg especially from the tradition of the Catholic youth movement "quick Born" has coming, a Christian education and conference center in free sponsorship made as a name. The castle is also a youth hostel of DJH.
