Route F35 (Iceland)

The high land Kjölur accurate the name Kjalvegur is about 160 km, the second longest and the middle highlands passages of Iceland.

Course

It begins in Haukadalur just behind the waterfall Gullfoss, runs between the Langjökull and Hofsjökull. Finally, it ends near Blönduós in the north of the island. This path is now marked with number 35 (formerly F37 ) into the card, so it is no highland road ( Fjallavegur ) more. Nevertheless, this road is closed over the winter.

Approximately in the middle of the track is Hveravelir, the site of the hot springs. Just 30 km south of Hveravelir bend the runway to the Kerlingarfjöll to the northeast. Particularly impressive is a flow passage above, next to the waterfall Gýgjarfoss. More - even more difficult - river crossings follow.

In approximately parallel to the Kjölur sprengisandur -piste runs to the east of the Hofsjökull by the Icelandic highlands.

West of the existing piste runs the old Kjalvegur. It is still used by trekking friends and riders.

History

After the October 1780 died five riders with their horses and over 150 sheep here ( Beinahóll / bone hill ) in a snow storm, got the route for about 100 years in oblivion. It was rediscovered in the late 19th century and relabelled.

Today, the route also delighted with tourists increasingly popular because there are no rivers or large streams more have to be crossed. The track is graded or gravel. In the northern part of the river Blanda was dammed for a hydroelectric power plant.
