Roy A. Tucker

Roy A. Tucker ( born 1951, in Jackson (Mississippi), USA ) is an American astronomer. He is regarded as an outstanding discoverer of asteroids. He has identified between 1996 and 2006 more than 210 asteroids and co-discovered.

Tucker grew up in Memphis ( Tennessee). Since 1966 he is a member of Memphis Astronomical Society. He earned a master's at the University of California at Santa Barbara. He is currently working as an engineer in the Imaging Technology Laboratory at the University of Arizona.

Awards and discoveries

  • 2002, as one of five scientists who were awarded the "Gene Shoemaker Near Earth Object Grant".
  • As probably the most important discovery is considered the Mitentdeckung of the asteroid ( 99942 ) Apophis (previously better known under its provisional designation 2004 MN4 ) along with David J. Tholen and Fabrizio Bernardi of the University of Hawaii. The asteroid will come very close to Earth on April 13, 2029.
