Royal antelope

(Neotragus pygmaeus )

The (Neotragus pygmaeus ) is a dwarf antelope, which is common in West African rain forest between Sierra Leone and Ghana.

With a shoulder height of 25 cm is the smallest of all the Kleinstböckchen Bovidae; among cloven-hoofed animals are just the mouse deer even smaller. The coat color is reddish brown on the upper side and lower side white. The horns are 12 to 25 mm long, straight and black.

Very little is known about the lifestyle. In the fables of some West African nations, the Kleinstböckchen has a place as a clever and nimble animal. Here it has the name "King of the rabbit". Perhaps this name was also the origin of the English name royal antelope ( "King antelope ").
