Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh

The Botanic Garden Edinburgh, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh english, founded in 1670 is a botanical garden in the Scottish city of Edinburgh.

He is both a scientific institution, as well as a tourist attraction. Today it is spread over four sites in Edinburgh, Dawyck, Logan and Benmore; each of the four sites has specialized collections.

The current "Chairman " is Paul Nicholson, the " Regius Keeper" is Stephen Blackmore.

History

The Botanic Garden Edinburgh was founded in 1670 to cultivation pharmaceutically usable plants. It was originally created by St. Anne 's Yard near the Holyrood Palace by Robert Sibbald and Andrew Balfour. He is ( according to the Botanical Garden of the University of Oxford) is the second oldest botanical gardens of Great Britain.

The plantings were in 1763 saved to severe air pollution before and placed in the proximity of the road to Leith. In 1820 the garden was converted to its present location at Inverleith.

1858 " Temperate Palm House " was built, which is still the largest of its kind in the UK.

1929, the Botanical Garden in Benmore was the first branch ( " Regional Garden" ) of the Botanic Garden Edinburgh. In 1969 the Botanical Garden of Logan, 1978, the Botanical Garden of Dawyck.
