Royal Radar Establishment

52.1-2.316

The Royal Radar Establishment ( German: Royal radar device ) was a British radar research station.

The name was given to the former Radar Research Establishment, after a visit of the British Queen Elizabeth II in 1957. The abbreviation RRE was able to be maintained. The institution was founded in 1953 under its original name from the Telecommunications Research Establishment ( TRE ) and the Radar Research and Development Establishment ( RRDE ) was formed. Both institutions worked on air-and land-based radar systems.

The RRE was located in Malvern, Worcestershire, where the TRE and RRDE were in different places. The original work of the TRE and RRDE on radar, solid state physics and electronics, as well as hardware and software has continued in the now connected device. This later work came to cryogenics and other areas. In the military area has been worked on infrared target detection for guided missiles and heat detection devices.

From its inception until 1959, the RRE was under the British Ministry of procurement, then the Air Ministry. When this was dissolved in 1967, the Technology Department took over the management in 1970, the Ministry of Aviation Procurement and 1971 the Department of Defense. In 1976, the RRE was dissolved. Some tasks took over the Royal Aircraft Establishment, others the newly founded Royal Signals and Radar Establishment.
