Roye, Haute-Saône

Roye is a commune in Haute -Saône in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

Roye is situated at an altitude of 302 m above sea level, 4 km south-east of Lure and about 29 km east-northeast of the town of Vesoul (air line). The village is located in the eastern part of the department, in the plane of Lure, between the rivers of Ognon and Rahin.

The area of ​​10.37 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the level of Lure. The Floodplain on the edge of the Vosges is on average 300 m. It is crossed by the rivers Ognon and Rahin flowing with numerous windings through a formerly swampy area to the southwest. The plane is used partly agricultural, partly it is passed with forest. Former sand and gravel pits are filled due to the high ground water level with water.

The northwestern boundary runs along the Ognon. To the north of the municipality floor extends into the vast grove of Grand Bois and up to the edge of the runway facilities of the former airfield Lure Malbouhans. The eastern boundary marked part of the stream of Ruisseau des Prés Besançon. East of this water body, the municipality's area extends into the Grove La Noye Jeannin. With 333 m find the highest mountains of Roye is achieved. This hill consists of an alternation of sandy- marly and calcareous sediments that were deposited during the Lias ( Lower Jurassic ).

Roye to the development La Verrerie (302 m) is in the plane of Lure. Neighboring communities of Roye are Froideterre and La Neuvelle -lès -Lure in the north, La Côte and Palante in the east, Frotey -lès -Lure Lure in the south and the west.

History

Is first mentioned Roye in 1134 under the name Roa. For later times the names Roha ( 1187 ) and Rhoa ( 1275 ) have survived; since 1431 exists today notation. Its name originates from the Celtic language and means as much as applied by man watercourse. In the Middle Ages Roye belonged to the Free County of Burgundy and in the territory of the Bailliage d' amont. It was the center of a dominion which belonged to the early 15th century the noble family of Roye. Then the rule came to Grammont and their vassals. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the place with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 definitively to France. Today Roye is a member of the comprehensive 22 villages municipal association Communauté de communes du Pays de Lure.

Attractions

The church of Saint -Hippolyte in Roye was built in 1507 and enlarged in 1552 and 1835 and has a bell tower with pyramidal roof. In-room amenities include a wooden crucifix (17th century) and paintings from the 18th century. Three Calvaires date from the 16th and 18th centuries. Population

With 1368 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Roye one of the larger towns in the Haute- Saône. Once the population has consistently had in the first half of the 20th century in the range between 500 and 600 people, a significant population growth has been recorded since the early 1960s. Since then, the population has more than doubled.

Economy and infrastructure

Roye has long been a predominantly by agriculture (crops, orchards and livestock ), forestry and fish farming embossed village. The water power of the river courses was formerly used for the operation of mills. In La Verrerie existed from 1792 to 1830 a glassworks. Today there are various companies of small and medium enterprises, mainly in the fields of welding, metal processing, construction, and gravel and sand mining. In recent decades the village has been transformed into a residential community. Many workers are therefore commuters who engage in the larger towns in the vicinity of their work.

The village has good transport links. It lies on the main road N19, which runs from Lure to Belfort, and on the D438 ( Lure - Héricourt ), which is expanded to four lanes here. Further road links exist with Malbouhans and Frotey -lès -Lure. Through the area, the railway line from Belfort leads via Lure to Vesoul. The nearest train station is in Lure.
