Largest pond in the Czech Republic

The Rosenberg -Weiher ( Czech Rožmberk Rybnik ) is a pond in southern Bohemia. He is the Třeboňská pánev between Trebon ( Trebon ) and Lužnice ( Luschnitz ). The largest preserved pond in the Czech Republic is also called South Bohemian sea. The original size of 1,060 acres was reduced to 489 acres currently.

The Pond laid the Rosenbergs dike builder Jakob Krcin of Jelčany in the years 1585-1589. 800 workers were involved in the construction of 750 000 cubic meters of earth were moved. The dam is 2,430 meters long, up to 9.8 meters high and 51 meters wide at the base. The width of the dam crest, which is covered with up to 400 year old oak trees, reached 13.5 meters. The capacity is 6.2 million cubic meters. Is fed to the Rosenberg pond by the river Lainsitz ( Czech Lužnice ) and the Golden channel. For the protection of the pond before floodwaters put Krcin above the pond the channel Nová Řeka at which directs the water into the Lainsitz Nežárka.

In Rosenberg pond aquaculture is still run. Since the pond but should not be fertilized in order not to affect the water quality of Lainsitz, he is not very profitable, and is only every two years fished. Under the dam since 1922, is a small hydroelectric power plant with two Francis turbines and an output of 260 kW. The main function satisfies the pond as floodplain in flood protection: Even the construction was probably a reaction to a great flood, which reached from South Bohemia from Prague on August 20, 1544. The protective function proved among others, devastating floods in 1890 and 2002. During the 2002 flood, he took up to 75 million cubic meters of water and spread across an area of ​​2,300 hectares.

The catchment area of the Lainsitz in the pond was formed into a small river delta during the last centuries of continuous sedimentation. The littoral is passed with extensive wet meadows and an important resting area for migratory birds. Since 1994, the area is available on 190.50 acres as a nature reserve Výtopa Rožmberka under protection.
