Rudi Mahall

Rudi Mahall ( born December 23, 1966 in Nuremberg, Germany) is a German bass clarinetist in the field of contemporary jazz. He is regarded as " one of the most internationally sought-after jazz musicians from Germany ".

Life and work

Mahall began fourteen years old to play clarinet. When studying classical clarinet he studied contemporary music and improvisation and changed because Eric Dolphy on bass clarinet. In 1990 he was a professional musician. The band contexts, to which he was involved or still belong Der Rote Bereich (initially with Frank Mobus, Marty Cook, Jim Black and Henning Sievert ) and Pro Susi, after moving to Berlin in 1993 then the disappointment ( with u a. Axel Dörner Jan Roder ) and, among other Fossile3 ( with Sebastian Gramss ) and FUSK ( with Kasper Tom Christiansen, Philipp Gropper, Andreas Lang).

He was involved in several projects and CDs with Aki Takase involved ( among other things, the music of Eric Dolphy and Fats Waller ) and has contributed to Alexander von Schlippenbach complete recording of the work of Thelonious Monk and the Globe Unity Orchestra. In addition, he gave concerts with Conny Bauer, Lee Konitz, Barry Guy, Karl Berger, Paul Lovens, Sven -Åke Johansson, Radu Malfatti, Ed Schuller, Ray Anderson, Kenny Wheeler, Hannes Bauer and many others. Since 1999 he has worked for a number of projects together with the Saarland jazz trombonist Christof Thewes.

Mahall occurred at the Festival Jazz à Mulhouse, the Moers Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Leverkusen Jazz Festival and Jazz Festival in New York City, Amsterdam, Munich, Würzburg and Nuremberg. He has, inter alia, Toured Portugal, South and East Africa completed.

Rudi Mahall 2011 received the SWR - Jazz Prize.
