Run (Baseball)

A run is a point won a team in baseball and softball. As with the goal in football, he is the most important scoring element. Although baseball is a very statistics -heavy sport that counts in the result solely the number of runs. This is achieved by a player ( batter, then base runner) by one or more ( by subsequent batters ) Hits runs once all the bases to home plate.

For example, a batter hits a hit, and reached the second base, where he remains. The next batter strikes again a hit, the runner on second base runs over the third base to home plate, and thus achieves a run.

If a base runner on second or third base, it is called scoring position. So it is at least likely that this achieves a run.

If a hitter one or more base runner, owing to a hit " brings home ", it is called a run batted in (RBI ). This can also happen if the hitter not even reached the first base, but to " sacrifice " by a fly-out or a ground -out.

Special

  • Inside-the - park home run: A batter hits the ball so that it is difficult for the fielder to reach and can go through all the bases without being thrown / tagged. This is reflected in professional baseball rare.
  • Grand Slam: All bases are occupied, and the batter hits a home run, this is one of four runs.
  • Base - clearing double or -triple: All bases are occupied, and the hitter hits a double or a triple. All runners come "home", and thus the hitter gets three runs batted in attributed.
