Rund um Berlin

The race Around Berlin is the oldest " classic" of the German road cycling.

The around the German capital of Berlin leading the race first took place in 1896 - Founded in Zossen on August 28, 1896 - making it five years younger than Bordeaux - Paris, the oldest regularly discharged road race ever. However, the importance of Around Berlin was always limited to the national level. So come with three exceptions all the winners of the race from Germany. 1935 as the race for the German road championship was held simultaneously around Berlin. Winners of professional drivers was Bruno Roth ( Wanderer).

Between 1946 and 1949 the bicycle race was still held as a total Berliner professional and amateur road racing. In 1950, two around Berlin, held first in the Western sectors, and in East Berlin. For the Cycling Federation of West Berlin, however, a further edition of the race proved to be no longer possible because the sections were blocked by the Government of the German Democratic Republic in the East. In the GDR Around Berlin was fought as an amateur race since 1950 and was considered at that time as one of the most important one-day race of the year. As a counterpart was simultaneously held in the 1950s in West Berlin round in Berlin.

Decreasing sporting significance and organizational chaos led after the political change to the classic round was not held at Berlin in the years 2001 to 2007. 2008 was the last time hosting.

With five hits 1959-1965 Klaus Ampler is the record-holder Around Berlin; Rudi Kirchhoff was four times successfully. 1951 celebrated the then 20 -year-old virgin Täve in Around Berlin his first major victory at all.
