Russ Freeman (Pianist)

Russ Freeman ( Russell Donald Freeman, born May 28, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, † 27 June 2002 in Las Vegas / Nevada) was an American jazz pianist.

Life and work

Freeman, who had classical piano lessons, worked in the 1940s in Los Angeles with musicians such as Howard McGhee, Al Killian, Dexter Gordon, Wardell Gray, Sonny Criss, Shelly Manne, Shorty Rogers and Art Pepper. He entered 1947 with Charlie Parker and took 1954 in Boston with Serge Chaloff. 1953-54 he was a member of the first quartet of Chet Baker and worked since 1955, eleven years with drummer Shelly Manne 's band Shelly Manne & His Men, beside 1958-59 with Benny Goodman. He was involved in records of Zoot Sims, Art Pepper, Maynard Ferguson and Clifford Brown, and Lambert, Hendricks & Ross.

Since the early 1960s, he withdrew more and more back from the music business. He founded a publishing company in 1962, has composed hits, played soundtracks for television and film, and only appeared occasionally.
