Russell J. Donnelly

Russell James Donnelly ( born April 16, 1930 in Hamilton ( Ontario) ) is a Canadian- American physicist who deals with solid-state physics ( quantum liquids, superfluidity, Low Temperature Physics ), turbulence and hydrodynamic stability.

Life

Donnelly graduated from McMaster University with a bachelor's degree in 1951 and a master's degree in 1952 with a thesis on experimental nuclear physics at Martin W. Johns. After that he went to Yale University, where he was in the low temperature physics group of CT Lane ( * 1904) and where Henry A. Fairbank and Lars Onsager were his teachers. In 1956 he received his doctorate at Lane and Onsager ( On the hydrodynamics of superfluid helium). It found, among other things, a publication with Oliver Penrose, in which they showed that the oscillations of liquid helium in a U-tube can be described at low temperature by Landau's two- fluid theory. He worked also with Archie Hollis Hallett together ( of similar experiments in Cambridge had done ) and examined the kinematic viscosity of helium II at the suggestion of Onsager. In 1956 he became instructor and later professor at the James Franck Institute, University of Chicago. From 1966 he was professor at the University of Oregon.

In 1972 he was at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. He was also a visiting professor at the University of California, Santa Barbara and the University of Birmingham. He was a consultant at NASA and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

Memberships, honors, Other

In 2002 he received the Fritz London Memorial Prize and the 1975 Otto Laporte Award. In 1996 he received the Lars Onsager medal of Trondheim University.

He became an honorary doctorate ( LLD) from McMaster University in 1999. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Physical Society (APS ) and the Institute of Physics. 1959 to 1963 he was a Sloan Fellow. 1971/72 and 1982/83 he was president of the APS.

He is an American and Canadian citizen.
