Russky Island (Kara Sea)

Russki (Russian Русский ) is a 306 km ² large, uninhabited island in the Kara Sea in the Asian part of Russia. It is the largest and northernmost island in the Nordenskiöld Archipelago.

History

1935 established the Headquarters Northern sea on the island of a weather station in order to carry out meteorological measurements. The station was also used to monitor the weather, the Wilkizkistraße and Kara, also measurements of ice thickness in the vicinity of the station were made.

Near Russki fell in 1942, the Russian icebreaker Sibiryakov by an unequal battle with the German battleship Admiral Scheer, which should disrupt the Arctic supply route of the USSR as part of the company's Wonderland.

In 1999, the Arctic Station on Russky was closed. Until recently, she served the observation of the weather or the tundrischen flora and fauna.
