S. League

The S. League is the highest division in the Singapore football. Its history dates back to the early 20th century. As a "closed" league there are no promoted and relegated. The Lead Association, the Football Association of Singapore (FAS ), decides according to specific criteria as to whether a new club in the league can join.

History

1904-1960

The first documented football matches in Singapore took place at the end of the 19th century. First, the teams usually consisted of crews, which just docked in Singapore, and local teams. Due to the popularity, the first division in Singapore was installed in 1904. Responsible drew the then Singapore Amateur Football Association. Founded in 1892, it is the oldest football association in Asia. At the start of the league of the European / English teams dominated before later local teams were added. 1952 replaced the Singapore Amateur Football Association by the Football Association Singapore.

1960-1987

From 1961 to 1974 no official league play more took place. However, an unofficial League took place, which was known as the National Football League. A total of 118 clubs and teams were involved in this league. 1975, the FAS, the National Football League decided to adapt as the official league. The name was retained and limited to 30 teams.

In 1988, the National Football League was renamed to the Premier League. The National Football League remained as unterklassige League on.

1988-1995

The Premier League was a semi-professional football league, which played only a minor role in the fans and the public. For the national team of Singapore took at that time a regular participant in the League Cup and Malaysia. 1996 - today

The champion of the S. League was Geylang United. In the final of the Singapore Armed Forces FC were beaten 2-1. For the 2008 season Dalian Shide Siwu replaced the club Liaoning Guangyuan in the S. League. For the 2010 season occurred in two new teams from the league.
