S. P. L. Sørensen

Søren Peter Lauritz Sørensen (known in Denmark as SPL Sørensen, born January 9, 1868 in Havrebjerg, Denmark, † February 13, 1939 ) was a Danish biochemist.

Life

Søren Sørensen received his doctoral degree from the University of Copenhagen. He was from 1901 to 1938 as the successor to Johan Kjeldahl head of the chemical department of the Carlsberg Laboratiums, which was supported by the same brewery. At this time he investigated the influence of the ion concentration on the analysis of proteins, which he eventually became an expert in the thermodynamics of protein chemistry. In this work he was assisted by his wife, Margrethe Sørensen Høyrup.

A significant achievement Sorensen 1909 was his definition of the pH scale. His name is also connected with the Sørensen - buffer formol titration and the known as " sodium oxalate by Sørensen " volumetric standard named after him.
