Saab 17

The Saab 17 was a Swedish dive bomber from the year 1940.

The project was started at the end of the 1930s as L 10 at the ASJA, but continued after the merger with Saab as a Saab 17. The wings were revised to allow use as a dive bomber.

From the plane, three different variants were built:

  • B 17A Pratt & Whitney R- 1830- SC3G engine 1,065 hp ( 794 kW)
  • B 17B Bristol Pegasus XXIV- engine 980 hp ( 731 kW)
  • B 17C Piaggio P.XIbis RC.400 1,020 hp ( 761 kW)

The mid-wing aircraft could be fitted with wheels, skis or floats. The tail wheel could be confiscated.

The first flight took place on 18 May 1940., 1942, the type with the Swedish Air Force ( Flygvapnet ) was put into service. With the advent of jet aircraft ended 1947, the period of service with the Swedish Air Force. A total of 325 aircraft were built. 1947 were sold to the Ethiopian Air Force 46 machines, which remained there until 1968 in service. The Danish Air Force set out some B 17A. Austria also had a machine that was used for aerial target representation.

The only remaining airworthy B 17A is operated by Flygvapenmuseum in Linköping. The aircraft was restored in the mid- 1990s, Saab and the Swedish Air Force. On 11 June 1997, the B 17A Fv17239 launched their first flight again.
