Sabaya

Sabaya is a village in the department of Oruro in the highlands of South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Sabaya is the administrative seat of the Province of Atahuallpa and central place of the district ( bolivian: Municipio) Sabaya. The village lies at an altitude of 3707 m in the valley of the Río Sabaya on the eastern slopes of the Cerro Pumari ( 4787 m). 25 km southeast of Sabaya of salt lake Salar de Coipasa, 20 kilometers to the south-west of the stratovolcano Tata Sabaya ( 5385 m).

Geography

The climate in the region is semi-arid, the annual rainfall is only 200 mm (see climate chart Sabaya ). The vegetation in the region corresponding to the semi-arid Puna. It is treeless and is composed mainly of thorn bushes, grasses, succulents and cushion plants. It is economically used as a llama, alpaca and sheep pasture.

Sabaya is located at a distance of 189 kilometers of road south-west of Oruro, the capital of the department of the same name.

From Oruro leads the largely unpaved Ruta 12 highway about 189 km in a southwesterly direction over Ancaravi and Huachacalla to Sabaya and on to Pisiga Bolívar at the Chilean border.
