Saepinum

Saepinum was an ancient city in central Italy.

Saepinum was first inhabited by the Samnites and lay on the northwestern slope of the mountain Mutria at today's Vecchia Torre. 293 BC it was conquered by the Romans under Lucius Papirius cursor (now Tammaro ) moved the city to the later Altilia place called the plain of Timmarus. In the Social War Saepinum received 89 BC, the Roman municipal law as municipium, which belonged to the tribe Voltinia. In the 2nd century it was colonia. From Saepinum the family of Neratii, which included several consuls and the jurist Lucius Neratius Priscus came from.

In the early Middle Ages Saepinum was abandoned. A succession settlement was again near the Samnite Saepinum and transferred the name later to its current Sepino.

The Roman city is been explored only partially. She was surrounded by four goals completed by a 4 AD ramparts. In the center of the city lies a trapezoidal Forum, which was paved according to an inscription of a Gaius Papius Faber. To the north was a theater.
