Safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius )

Safflower oil ( safflower oil, safflower oil ) is a vegetable oil obtained from the seeds of safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius ) is obtained. By cold pressing one obtains an edible oil by hot pressing a technically usable oil, chemical terms are both triglycerides. The crude oil is refined in part due to the scratchy taste. Depending on the average composition of triglycerides, a distinction between two kinds of oil: one with a higher proportion of esterified oleic acid ( also high oleic ) and another that predominates in the esterified linoleic acid. Furthermore, there is safflower SL (SL is structured lipid ), whose fatty acid composition has been modified by chemical or enzymatic esterification of the triglyceride. Despite its high content of linoleic acid residues safflower oil is very stable. The low proportion of saturated fatty acid residues makes it a nutritionally high quality oil.

Use

Kitchen

Since it is not heat resistant, it may not be used for frying. However, it is suitable for short steaming or cooking and as a salad oil. It is often used for vegetable dishes and there is mixed just before serving. It is also used in the preparation of margarine.

Medicine

In patients with hypercholesterolemia safflower oil can be used as a dietary supplement in combination with low-fat diet for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis due to its high content of unsaturated fatty acids. In addition, it inhibits enzymes of the blood coagulation such as thrombin, thereby reducing the risk of VTE in hypertriglyceridemia. In addition to influencing cardiovascular disease safflower oil can be applied topically also for rheumatism, paralysis, sprains and bruises.

Cosmetics

Safflower oil is often used as a skin and body care products. It serves as a moisturizing agent for bath oils and shower gels. It also serves as a skin oil over high seborrhea and acne. For normal skin with inflammation and inclinations due to the matting effect even with combination skin with an oily tendency it is likewise used. In the area around the eyes, it is used as a skin care oil. From the oil a soft soap can be produced.

Technology

After twelve hours of cooking results in a gelatinous mass ( Afridiwachs ), which is used as a substitute for linseed oil for the preparation of linoleum. Because Saflorölfilme not yellow, they are used for paint and varnish manufacture. A further indication is in the production of home wet bar, printing inks and alkyd resins. It is also used as a fuel oil and particularly in India as a lubricant for leather, and ropes.
