Safranin T (Arabic Zafaran, Gelbsein ) is a derivative of phenazine. It is a dye from the series of safranines, with colorations between red and purple.

Production and representation

The dye Safranine T is synthesized from a mixture of o-toluidine, aniline with hydrochloric acid and sodium nitrite.

Use

Safranine T is used for coloring in microscopy. In addition, it is used as a coloring agent for leather. In chemical analysis, it is also used as pH and redox indicator. The oxidized form here is red, the reduced form is colorless. Safranine T can also be used for Gram- staining of the bacteria. It is with Astra Blue in the double staining of plant cells use wherein it lignified cell walls red color, while woody cell walls are stained blue by Astra blue. Safranine T is also used in the Chromaffinfärbung of epithelial cells of the intestinal mucosa. Mauvein is an analog dye.
