Saint Andrew Parish, Jamaica

Saint Andrew is a county ( parish ) in the southwest of Jamaica. The capital is Half Way Tree. The National Hero George William Gordon was born here. In the south, the University of the West Indies are located as well as the University of Technology.

History

Saint Andrew was built in 1867 as the first of the Parish formally established, the area was previously known under the name of Liguanea. Since 1932, Saint Andrew, together with the neighboring Kingston, the management unit Kingston and St Andrew Corporation.

Geography

Saint Andrew is bordered to the south directly to Kingston, to the west is Saint Catherine, Saint Mary in the North and the Northeast Portland. The Blue Mountain range runs through the Parish. The few cities in the country are essentially suburbs of the nearby Kingston, but the West Saint Andrews is especially densely populated.

Economy

Large parts of the Parish are used for agriculture, especially the cultivation of coffee, mangoes, cocoa, peas, beans, sugar cane and the cattle. To move firms to move to settle in Saint Andrew, a 1.2 km ² was expelled large industrial area. In the area of Bull Bay in the east there are large gypsum deposits.
