Saint Asaph

  • For the biblical person see Asaf.

St. Asaph was a Scottish medieval saint from the second half of the 6th century, a pupil of St. Mungo's. He was in succession Mungo superior of the monastery in Llanelwy.

Among his numerous miracles is the best known, the replacement of the lost ring of Queen Ness, wife of Maelgwyn Gwynedd, King of North Wales. He had slipped off her finger into the river, but appeared after a prayer to the Holy in the belly of a salmon that has just been applied to the meal. This traveling Sage is already of Polycrates ( tyrant of Samos) known, but here with a negative interpretation.

According to the Holy a city and a bishopric in Wales is named.
