Saint-Girod

Saint- Girod is a town in the French department of Savoie in the Rhone -Alpes.

Geography

Saint- Girod is on 355 m above sea level. M., about 25 km north of the town of Chambery (air line). The village is located in the southwestern Albanais, in the foothills west of the massif of the Wallows, on the eastern edge of the broad valley which connects the basins of Rumilly with the Lac du Bourget.

The area of ​​6.35 km ² municipal area comprises a portion of Albanais. The main part of the territory occupied by the 3 km wide valley floor, which continues from Rumilly south to the area of Aix -les- Bains. Previously, the dip at Saint- Girod formed a large swamp area, today more and more areas are drained and reclaimed from the moor. The valley is drained by the Deisse and south to the Lac du Bourget. The western boundary of the municipality is approximately in the middle of the valley floor, mostly along the stream of Deisse. From here, the municipality's area extends eastward across the valley and on the adjacent lower slopes of the ridge of Héry. These slopes are mostly forested and are divided by small valleys from different streams of Deisse. Here is 537 m above sea level. M. reached the highest point of Saint- Girod.

Neighboring municipalities of Saint- Girod are Saint- Félix in the north, Chainaz -les- Frasses and Saint -Ours in the east, the south and Mognard Albens in the West.

History

Saint- Girod is first mentioned in the 13th century. The town is named after Saint Geraud ( Bishop of Uzès ). In the Middle Ages Saint- Girod was the property of the reign Montfalcon.

Attractions

The village church was rebuilt in the 19th century on the site of an earlier building. There are chapels in Saint- Lazare ( on the site of an early Christian building ) and in Marcellaz. The municipal area are in Marcellaz, Colombier and La Villette three castles from the 17th respectively 18th century.

Population

With 581 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) Saint- Girod is one of the small communities of the department of Savoie. Since the early 1980s, a continuous increase in population was recorded thanks to the attractive residential area.

Economy and infrastructure

Saint- Girod was until well into the 20th century a predominantly coined by farming village. In addition, developed in recent times various operations of small and medium enterprises. Meanwhile, the village has developed into a residential community. Many workers are commuters who engage in the larger towns in the area as well as in space Chambéry and Annecy their work.
