Saint-Maixent-l'École

Saint- Maixent- l'École is a commune with 7159 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Deux -Sèvres in the Poitou -Charentes; it belongs to the district Niort and is the capital of the cantons of Saint- Maixent- l'École -1 and Saint- Maixent- l'École -2.

History

Saint- Maixent was founded around 459 by the monk Agapit and was initially Saint Saturnin. In the year 480 the monk Adjutor moved on as a student of Agapit. Adjutor later took the name Maixent and gave the city its name.
