Saint Maurus

Saint Maurus (from Latin Maurus, the Moor; * 500-512 in Rome, † to 584 in Gaul ) was a Benedictine monk and successor of St. Benedict.

Life

Already as a teenager he was presented by his father, the Roman nobles and Senator Eutichius, St. Benedict of Nursia for education in the monastery. He soon became the favorite pupil of this abbot and distinguished himself by his obedience and strict observance of the monastic rules. Pope Gregory the Great says in his biography of St. Benedict, that he had to rescue a fallen into the water confrere, Placidus, gone over the water.

Maurus was probably the successor of Saint Benedict as Abbot of Subiaco when he went away to found the Abbey of Montecassino. Maurus died in the 6th century.

Relics

In the 9th century, the abbey Glanfeuil in France (later called the Abbey of Saint -Maur- sur- Loire) relics of Maurus found. This prompted Abbot Odo to submit a legend that Benedict had sent his disciple to Gaul, there to found a monastery as its abbot he had then worked. This tradition was kept for credible long. Therefore, he was also the patron of the Congregation Maurists, the French Benedictine, worshiped.

This Maurus relics were transferred to the abbey of Saint- Maur- des-Fosses, 1750 in Saint- Germain -des- Prés (Paris) 868. In the turmoil of the French Revolution they were lost.
