King Amazone

The King (Amazona guildingii ) is a species of parrot from the subfamily of Neuweltpapageien. The living only on the Lesser Antilles island of St. Vincent Amazone heard as some other also only endemic species of the highly endangered Amazon parrot.

Description

The ground color of the plumage of this 40 to 41 centimeters tall expectant and overall very colorful style is golden brown, depending on the color morph, olive-brown, red-brown or green. This distinguishes it from the other species of the genus. Regardless of the color morph forehead and crown are white. The back of the head and the throat and sides of the neck are orange. The cheeks and ear covers are violet blue. The tail feathers are orange at the base, towards the middle purple and show at its end a dark, almost to the Orange playing yellow.

The King Amazone originally lived in all the mountain rainforests of St. Vincent. As for many other species initially have limited the habitat of the king Amazone large-scale habitat destruction. Two natural disasters, namely the hurricane "David" and the eruption of the Soufriere volcano in 1979 have then ensured that the species is distributed over several small forest islands today. After a low of about 400 animals of the stock has risen again. For this purpose, a protection status of remaining habitats and an awareness campaign among the population of St. Vincent on the National Bird declared parrot have contributed significantly.
