Saints Peter and Paul Church, Kraków

The Roman Catholic St. Peter and Paul Church in Krakow is located in the Grodzkastraße and is famous for the statues of the twelve apostles.

History

The Peter and Paul's Church was built on the initiative of the priest Piotr Skarga for the Jesuit Order. It was founded by King Sigismund III. donated. At the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries it was designed, among other things by the architect Giovanni Trevano modeled after the Roman Gesù Church. In 1635 she was finished, she was the first Baroque building in Krakow. In the dome of the church is known as the Foucault pendulum was hung, which proves by its deviation that the earth rotates. In the crypt under the chancel of the church, the remains of Piotr Skarga rest.

At the entrance to St. Peter and Paul's Church there are twelve mighty late Baroque figures of the apostles. However, these were replaced by copies in the 18th century, as the originals were completely eaten away by air pollution. In 2003 they were again completely restored after the aggressive emissions of Krakow's steelworks in Nowa Huta they had almost entirely destroyed.
