Company History

The root of the company, which first operated under the name Saipem 1957, go back to the year 1940 when the SAIP ( Società Anonima Imprese Perforazioni ) was founded. Directed by Alfredo Giarratana it was then, the former chairman of Agip 1929-1932 and one of the Italian Pioneere of oil production. SAIP works primarily as a drilling contractor. In 1943 the company was taken over majority of Ente Nazionale gas and in 1949 began working for Agip. The Ente Nazionale gas was dissolved in 1953 and founded ENI, which took over the entire shareholding of SAIP. 1955 began to work for the first time abroad. So was worked in France with Intersomer and in Somalia with Agip.

On December 31, 1957, Saipem was created by the merger of SAIP and SNAM Montaggi, construction of facilities of SNAM. Enrico Mattei initiated at that time, the company with Carlo Zanmatti and Raffaele Girotti. In the first two years after the establishment of 740 kilometers (km) were installed gas and oil pipeline, thus laying the foundation for the great Italian pipeline network, which now has about 27,000 km in length.

In 1958, the first refinery was built abroad in Lebanon and only a year later drilled the first offshore well in Europe by the Saipem Scarabeo 1. The as Gela Mare 21 designated borehole was 1.5 km from the coast in a water depth of 20 meters (m). In the same year, the first holes in Patagonia (Argentina ) and in the Zagros (Iran) were carried out and built a pipeline in Iran.

The drilling platform " Gatto Selvatico ", then a great development for Saipem, was completed in 1960. In May 1961, the Gela field has been developed with a new platform and further five holes performed. On July 31, 1962, Saipem has been operating as part of SNAM in addition to the areas " Progetti " and " Laboratori Riuniti, Studi e Ricerche " incorporated. December 10, 1965 was established by Agip and SNAM SNAMPROGETTI to life for the planning and commissioning of equipment in the petroleum industry. This was the start of a great number of such as refineries and pipelines projects, hence Agip gave 1966 its operating drilling business with all the facilities and the staff at Saipem from. In the same year offshore projects in the Persian Gulf with the " Gatto Selvatico " started in the Bargain -Sar -, Now- Ruz and Rostam fields. On September 1, 1969, Saipem has been converted into a public limited company and has since been trading as Saipem SpA.

1970, the company entered into the assembly activity with the construction of an oil terminal at Bargain -Sar - field. In the Gulf of Gaeta in 1972, a 32-inch pipeline was laid at a depth of 320 m and 1974 designed the " Castoro Sei", a pipeline - laying ship for deep water. In the same year a 10 -inch pipeline was laid through the Strait of Messina. The contract to build the " marun - Esfahan " pipeline through the Zargos Mountains was completed in 1975. Also Saipem 1975 laid the heaviest offshore pipeline before Abu Dhabi. The 48-inch pipeline weighed 1082 kilograms per meter. 1976, a record with the repair of a pipeline in the Strait of Sicily was erected in depth 560 m and a year later a record for the laying of a pipeline to 608 m in the same region.

The construction of the Transmed pipeline from Algeria to Italy was carried out by the company. The project, which is also known as " Enrico Mattei - pipeline " was started in 1980 and consisted of three 20-inch strands. Saipem 1985 was first listed on the stock exchanges of Milan and Paris.

The semi-submersible drilling rig " Scarabeo 5" was completed in 1990 at the shipyard of Fincantieri in Sestri Ponente. The ship was designed specifically for sub- arctic climate and began drilling in the North Sea along the 62nd parallel. 1994 Transmed was extended by two more lines, each with 26 inches. From the Italian competitor Micoperi which was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1990, was finally acquired the deepwater workboat M 7000 in 1995 and renamed in 7000 Saipem.

In May 2002, the Saipem acquired the company Bouygues Offshore sa and the sale of Acergy Piper to Saipem by Acergy was completed in 2009. The ship now operates under the name Castoro 7
