Sakhalin Railway

The Sachalinskaja schelesnaja doroga (Russian Сахалинская железная дорога ) from 1992 to 2010, a branch of Russian Railways ( RZD), whose route network was on the Russian Pacific island of Sakhalin. Administrative headquarters was Yuzhno -Sakhalinsk.

History

The railway on island Sakhalin began after the Russo - Japanese War ( 1904-05 ), as a result, the southern part of the island was ceded pursuant to the Treaty of Portsmouth in Japan. On the Japanese side of the island at first a narrow gauge railway line from Korsakov (then Japanese Otomari ) to Yuzhno -Sakhalinsk ( Toyohara ) was constructed of 42.5 km in length at 600 mm gauge. The track was later umgespurt to the width usual in Japan of 1067 mm ( Cape gauge ). 1911 was the construction of a branch line from Yuzhno- Sakhalinsk to Starodubskoje (53.5 km long). From 1918 to 1921, the places Newelsk ( Honto ), Kholmsk ( Maoka ), Chekhov ( Noda ) and Tomari ( Tomarioru ) were connected to the railway network.

After the Second World War, which also gives the southern part of Sakhalin fell to the Soviet Union, the existing lines as well as the driving material were ( such as steam and diesel locomotives) taken over by the Soviet Railways. The wagons used came mostly from the holdings of the Soviet track and have been converted for use on the narrow gauge railway network. Specially designed for use on Sakhalin were the diesel TG16 and TG21 built from the locomotive plant in Ljudinowo.

The Soviet period in the north of the island developed to Nogliki network had 1992, a length of 1072 km. 2006 there were still 805 km in operation. The decrease is explained by the closure of lightly used sections, such as between Datschnoje and Aniwa and between Dolinsk and Starodubskoje.

1992 Sachalinskaja schelesnaja doroga was removed from the Dalnewostotschnaja schelesnaja doroga and an independent railway company under the supervision of the traffic route Ministry (MPS ). At the founding of RŽD as a public company in 2003, she became one of its branches. 2009 Sachalinskaja schelesnaja doroga was dissolved as a branch and used again by the Dalnewostotschnaja schelesnaja doroga.

Connection to the mainland grid

For the connection to the Russian mainland rail network, a train ferry between Wanino ( Dalnewostotschnaja schelesnaja doroga ) and Kholmsk is operated. Due to the different track width one axis change is required. In the early 1950s, the construction of a railway tunnel was started under the Tatar Strait, which should connect Sakhalin to the mainland. The construction works were soon canceled. To date, it is the intention of the Russian Government to complete this project. A specific timetable but there is no. Work on upgrading the road network of the island used in Russia track width of 1520 mm are already underway. Its completion was originally announced for 2012.
