Sakyō-ku, Kyoto

Sakyō -ku (Japanese左 京 区, dt "left Capital District " ) is one of eleven districts ( ku ) of Kyoto, Japan. It was established on 1 April 1929 by becoming separated from Kamigyo -ku. Sakyō -ku is located in the northeast of Kyoto, the Kamo River forms the border to the city center.

Etymology

The name Sakyō, "left capital district ", comes from the fact that the Japanese emperor sat southbound when he resided in the imperial palace, so that the eastern areas lay by him from the left. Accordingly, ie the Western District Ukyo -ku, which means " right capital district ". Originally designated Sakyō the eastern parts of the historic city center, the current district Sakyō -ku on the other hand is east of the Kamo and thus outside the historic city limits.

Geography

The south of the district is dominated by residential areas and educational institutions. For example, the Kyoto University here has its main campus. The North of Sakyō -ku is mountainous and has a growing timber industry. The main streets of the district Kawabata, Higashiōji and Shirakawa run from south to north. The Demachiyanagi station is approached by both the Keihan Oto - line, which runs south to Osaka, and on the main line and the Eizan Eizan Kurama - line, which operate only within the city district north to the train stations Yase or Kurama.

Attractions
